Understanding Hormones and HRT

1. The Nature of Hormones

Function: Hormones regulate a wide array of bodily processes, affecting everything from metabolism and growth to mood and sexual function.

Definition: Hormones, derived from the Greek word "horman" meaning "to set in motion," are powerful chemical messengers that travel through the blood and lymph systems, signaling cells and organs to perform specific actions.

2. Synthetic vs. Bio-identical Hormones

Synthetic Hormones are chemically altered versions of natural hormones created in laboratories, often to secure patents. While they mimic many of the functions of natural hormones, they tend to have more unwanted side effects.

Bio-identical Hormones are molecularly identical to the hormones produced by the human body. They are derived from plants and altered to match natural human hormones, and compounded individually based on a patient's prescription.

3. The Debate: Bio-identical vs. Synthetic in HRT

Safety and Efficacy: A growing body of evidence indicates that bio-identical hormones are safer and more effective than synthetic hormones.

Conflicting Interests: Pharmaceutical companies often favor synthetic hormones due to patentability, which leads to commercialization and profit.

Research: Bio-identical hormones have demonstrated lower risks, including breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, and are more effective than synthetic hormones. In a large study involving 80,000 women over a period of 8 years, bio-identical hormones have demonstrated that they were not associated with breast cancer, unlike synthetic hormones.

4. Six Major Hormones and Their Functions

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)

DHEA is the most abundant hormone produced in the adrenal glands and brain. It is the precursor to other hormones like estrogen and testosterone. It lowers fat storage, increases bone density and muscle mass, fights cancer.
Low levels of DHEA are linked to inflammation, cognitive decline, low libido and cancer risk. Excess can cause acne, tumor formation, and hair loss.

Estrogen

Primarily a female sex hormone produced mostly in the ovaries, estrogen protects against heart disease and strokes.
In women, low levels of estrogen can cause skin thinning, vaginal dryness, fatigue, and mood swings.
There are three types of estrogen; (1) Estrone (most prevalent after menopause), (2 Estradiol (pre-menopause), and (3) Estriol (most abundant during pregnancy).
Men also have small amounts of estrogen. Not enough estrogen in men can lead to osteoporosis, prostate cancer; and too much can cause increased fat, fatigue, loss of muscle mass, and emotional changes.

HGH (Human Growth Hormone)

Secreted in the pituitary gland, HGH is responsible for tissue regeneration and rejuvenation, hair/nail/skin integrity, bone strength, brain function, and enzyme production. Loss of HGH is linked to increased fat, lost muscle mass, reduced energy, cardiovascular disease, and mortality.

Pregnenolone

Produced in the brain and adrenal cortex, synthesized from cholesterol, Pregnenolone is the precursor to DHEA.
It allows for peak performance of the brain and memory, but its production drops by 50% from ages 20 to 40.

Testosterone

Testosterone is primary male sex hormone, produced in the adrenals and testes. It increases muscle mass and endurance, reduces fat levels, promotes libido and sexual performance. It also protects against cardiovascular diseases and age-related disease.
Critical to the health of both men and women.

T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine)

Those two hormones are produced in the Thyroid gland, and regulated by TSH from the pituitary gland.
The thyroid uses iodine to produce those hormones, and it also produces calcitonin to strengthen bones.
